preparation, passion and a bit of luck
Chance happens. Planning and preparation minimise the risk that chance will work against you but, any activitiy that has an element of creativity includes chance. Sometimes chance will undermine years of planning. Sometimes it will make you look underservedly heroic. The best players, however, accept that chance happens but refuse to leave their outcome up to it. These are the heroes, top of their game, serious professionals who have respect for what they are doing and all those affected by it. And in the end, like Louis Pasteur said, "chance favors the prepared mind."
