user generated businesses - this is hot

Slated as one of the top eight trends to watch, Make It Yourself (MIY) is a cool vision with exciting possibilities. The idea is that website users are enabled to put together their own entire businesses. Digital content has been first cab off the block with various mashups (e.g. splice - where you can put together your own sounds). Physical products are also coming on strong - look no further than Ponoko, where you can apply your creativity to some cool digi design tools and have your new products manufactured and sold. This is a new breed of kiwi ingenuity receiving awards and global recognition - see their mention in The Economist on bespoke manufacturing.  Saas pioneers like salesforce are right into it but Amazon will be most interesting to watch. Amazon are renting people the tools, virtual space, contacts and markets to put together entire retail operations (read more at USA Today). Hook in a core operation like Netsuite and you truly have a virtual, end-to-end, global niche business. Connect local production and markets and you can lie on the beach relaxing in the knowledge its even a carbon winner.
